Patrick Basset, MD

Doctor Anesthesiologist practicing in operating room and in French mountain rescue, specialized in the medical supervision of ultra-endurance sports in hostile environments. Medical Director of Dokever: a medical aid company that coordinates all the means of relief in hostile environments or not, for mass sports meetings or not. Medical Director of the Paris Marathon of the UTMB of the Etape du Tour de France for more than 10 years. Field doctor first. Medical research and its financing have become a priority to improve scientific knowledge in order to professionalize these universes and protect the health of athletes. It does so thanks to the Presidency of the Medical Committee of ITRA (International Association of Trail Running) and a Franco-American Foundation: Ultra Sports Science.

 

 

Dr. Ricardo Costa

Dr. Ricardo Costa is an academic, researcher, consultant and practitioner in sports dietetics and extremes physiology, based in the Department of Nutrition & Dietetics at Monash University, Australia. His publication outputs, in exploratory field and laboratory controlled intervention research, includes focus on the nutritional and hydration status in ultra-endurance running, physiological responses to ultra-endurance in the heat, impact of endurance exercise on the immune system and nutritional counter-measures, and the impact of endurance exercise (with and without heat-stress) on gut health including prevention and management strategies. As a sports dietetic practitioner, he has provided nutritional support in a variety of sports (i.e., teams, aquatic, combat, endurance, ultra-endurance, adventure and expedition) ranging from junior development to veteran athletes, and from recreational to world championship and Olympic athletes. Before entering a career in academics he was a professional trialthlete/duathlete competing on the World and European circuit between 1994-2003.

 

 

Dr. Nicola Giovanelli

Dr. Nicola Giovanelli is Postdoctoral Researcher in Exercise Physiology and Biomechanics at University of Udine, Italy. Actually, his main field of study is the energetics and mechanics of running with a main focus on ultra-endurance running and mountain running. He loves endurance and mountain sports and he is himself a trail-runner of the Team La Sportiva. Further, he coaches several trail-runners of different levels (from amateurs to elite athletes).

 

 

Martin D. Hoffman, MD, FACSM

Dr. Marty Hoffman is Professor of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at the University of California Davis, and Chief of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at the VA Northern California Health Care System. He is also a Founder of the Ultra Sports Science Foundation, a non-profit organization focused on the enhancement and distribution of scientific and medical knowledge related to participation in ultra-endurance activities. He has published over 150 original scientific papers, mostly related to applied exercise physiology with focus on human locomotion, human performance and proper hydration during prolonged exercise. His clinical work has involved cardiac rehabilitation, musculoskeletal medicine and sports medicine. He is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and serves on multiple editorial boards. He has been a competitive cross-country skier or distance runner for most of his life, and still enjoys exploring his own limits…..though at a much slower pace than in the past.

 

 

Volker Scheer, MD, MRCGP, MECOSEP

Volker qualified in Medicine from the University of Munich, Germany. He trained and qualified as a General Practitioner in Edinburgh, UK and as a Sports Physician at the Olympic Training Centre at the University of Heidelberg, Germany.He worked as a SEM consultant and assistant professor at the Sports Medicine Department at the University of Paderborn, Germany. He is now medical lead for the rehabilitation unit for the British Forces in Germany and professor at the UDIMA University in Madrid, Spain. He regularly works for the European Golf Tour and has recently worked at the Olympic Games 2016 in Rio de Janeiro and Athletics World Championships in London 2017. He is founding member of the Ultra Sports Science Foundation. He has published several scientific papers examining the impact of exercise on the human body, especially in ultra endurance sports and trail running. In his youth he was a competitive sprinter at national level.
